Maxene Prevost Shephard ABSW Bursary

Maxene Prevost Shephard was born in Newport Station, Nova Scotia February 20, 1931, one of twelve children of George and Stella Prevost. In 1949 Maxene married Edward Shephard and they moved to Truro where she attended the Normal School for Teachers. The following year the young couple found their faith deepening and they joined the Zion Baptist Church where Maxene became a Sunday School Teacher and eventually the Superintendent of Sunday Schools. Maxene and Edward later moved to
Montreal. In 1974 Maxene began her studies in Psychology and went on to become one of the first to receive a diploma in Family Life Education from Montreal’s Collège Marie-Victorin. For her third-year practicum she chose to work with single mothers in the Children’s Services Centre and in her fourth year worked with Diane Jacobs. Maxene worked with Diane to create the Canadian Association of Black Social Workers (ABSW) in Montreal. This was an especially fulfilling time as Maxene worked with families who had Black students in high school and many Caribbean children in the process of being reunified with mothers who had migrated to Canada as domestic workers many years before. When they moved back to Halifax, Maxene introduced the ABSW as a Nova Scotia chapter in 1979 and is one of the four founding members of the Nova Scotia ABSW. Maxene also became an active volunteer with several organizations, believing that these interactions would establish the ABSW as a valued organization worthy of respect and support.
